A village originalIn partnership with Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, and by supporting the Sanctuary's Threatened Species program, our children and the wider village team are helping to build a better future for endangered native species. Together we make a difference by raising community awareness and educating children about wildlife and environment conservation.
Children at Currumbin Village have special access to Sanctuary programs. They join Virtual Frog Lab tours with frog specialist Mikey Vella, meet the TinkerFrogs, and enjoy story time with Sarah Eccleston, the Sanctuary's head koala keeper and author of "Have You Seen a Tree for Me".
Direct access to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary keepers, animals and habitats.
Composting, planting, waste sorting and habitat care built into daily rhythms.
Native species, seasons and local ecology explored through play.
Kids bring the practices home, from worm farms to water saving.
"Children who grow up knowing the names of the frogs in their garden grow up wanting to protect them."
Our stories
Story one
Our Green Earth Kids helped rescue and care for several distressed rainbow lorikeets. With the help of the Sanctuary Hospital, all four lorikeets were rehabilitated and returned to their local habitat. The children affectionately called this the "Rainbow Rescues".
To celebrate, we hid four ornamental lorikeets in our bush tucker garden. Their location changes often, delighting the children as they try to spot them.
Story two
The Sanctuary rescued, rehabilitated and released Gordon Koala back into the bushland reserve behind our centre. It is heart-warming to see the children's excitement as they spot their wildlife friends up in the trees.
The children affectionately chose the names Gordon and Kevin after characters in one of their favourite koala books. Another loved koala they regularly see is Borobi, who lends his name to our Toddlers room.
Story three
Our worm farm turns scraps and garden clippings into compost, and encourages a lifelong appreciation of nature and sustainability. Families take home worm wee for their own gardens.
Little ones nurture the edibles and flowers in our bush tucker garden through the year, balancing on the logs and stepping stones, watching out for the tiny green frogs, a sign of a healthy ecosystem.
Story four
The Virtual Frog Lab gave our children the chance to meet Sanctuary scientist Mikey and see tiny Tinkerfrogs up close. They learned how the conservation team is working to save these frogs from extinction, right as the team released 38 Kroombit Tinkerfrogs into the wild.
"Why do frogs lay eggs? How can frogs jump so high?" Questions from our Green Earth Kids.
"May you my baby, follow the rivers, wander the mountains, and walk in the wild."Alison Lester, Kissed by the Moon
Come and see for yourself
The best way to feel it is to walk it. Meet the educators, wander the gardens, breathe in the bushland.
